Course Analytics

Introduction

The 'Course Analytics' page provides detailed insights into student submissions, grades, and engagement. This guide will walk you through the key components of the dashboard, helping you make the most of the data to improve student outcomes and enhance your teaching strategy.

To access the course analytics page:

  1. Go to the 'Assignments' page.
  2. Select the relevant course.
  3. Click on the 'Analytics' button.

Course Overview

At the top of the dashboard, you’ll find a quick summary of your course. This section gives you a snapshot of the overall course activity:

  • Active students: The total number of students who logged in to the course on Alethea.
  • Published assignments: The number of assignments you have published.
  • Submission rate: The percentage of assignments submitted by students, based on students active in the course.
  • Average engagement per assignment: The average time students spend on each assignment, based on students active in assignments.

Course Submissions

This section provides a detailed view of assignment submissions.

Course View

  1. The 'course view' pie chart shows the status of all assignments (e.g., on time, late, missed), based on students active in the course.
  2. You can use the switches to indicate incomplete assignments and / or include pending assignments in the data.
  • On Time: Assignments submitted on or before the deadline.
  • Late: Assignments submitted after the deadline.
  • Missed: Assignments not submitted.
  • Incomplete: Assignments that are partially completed.
  • Pending: Assignments that are due but not yet submitted.

Assignments View

The data in this view is calculated based on the number of students active in each assignment.

  1. The 'assignment view' bar chart shows the status of each assignment over time.
  2. Select an assignment to see a breakdown of submission status for that specific task.
  3. Click on the assignment title to view the assignment analytics page.

Time Allocation

This section helps you understand how students allocate their time across different steps of an assignment. The data is calculated based on the number of students active in assignments. 

Course View

  1. The 'course view' pie chart shows the average time spent on each step of the assignments across the entire course.
  • Step 1: Average time spent reading and highlighting key points.
  • Step 2: Average time spent reviewing highlights and chatting with the Academic Coach.
  • Step 3: Average time spent answering questions.

Assignments View

  1. The 'assignment view' bar chart shows the average time spent on each step for individual assignments.
  2. Select an assignment to see a breakdown of time spent on each step for that specific task.
  3. Click on the assignment title to view the assignment analytics page.

Grades

This section provides insights into student performance. Grades are normalized to 100%.

Average

  1. The 'Average' tab presents a line chart showing the average grades across all assignments, including the range of grades in the background. All grades are normalized, expressing the score as a percentage of the total possible points
  2. Click on the circles to see the assignment title and the original average grade next to the normalized grade.

Distribution

  1. The 'Distribution' tab presents a histogram displaying the grade distribution among students for a specific assignment.
  2. Select an assignment to see detailed grade statistics.

Engagement

Understanding student engagement is crucial for identifying at-risk students and tailoring your teaching strategies.

  1. Active Students: List of students who logged in to Alethea.
  2. Assignment Submissions: Visual indicators of each student's submission status (on time, late, incomplete, missed, pending) over time.
  3. Engagement Level: Overall engagement rating based on submission rate and time spent data.
  4. Excluded Students: You can exclude students who dropped out from the presented data by hovering over the student's name and clicking on the 'Exclude student from data' icon. This action will affect all graphs on this page. A list of excluded students will appear on the bottom of the table, and you can include them again at any time by clicking on the icon.
